چکیده

In this paper, we investigate two problems, namely (a) minimizing a submodular cost function under combinatorial constraints, which include cuts, matchings, paths, etc., and (b) optimizing a submodular function under submodular cover and submodular knapsack constraints. While both problems have hardness factors of Ω( √ n) for general submodular cost functions, we show how we can achieve constant approximation factors (in certain cases, even fully polynomial time approximation schemes), when we restrict the cost functions to low rank sums of concave over modular functions. A wide variety of machine learning applications are very naturally modeled via this subclass of submodular functions. Our work therefore provides a tighter connection between theory and practice by enabling theoretically satisfying guarantees for a rich class of expressible, natural, and useful submodular cost models. We empirically demonstrate the utility of our models on a real world problem of cooperative image matching.

Optimal Approximation Algorithms for Multi-agent Combinatorial Problems with Discounted Price Functions

Submodular functions are an important class of functions in combinatorial optimization which satisfy the natural properties of decreasing marginal costs. The study of these functions has led to strong structural properties with applications in many areas. Recently, there has been significant interest in extending the theory of algorithms for optimizing combinatorial problems (such as network de...

Cardinality Constrained Graph Partitioning into Cliques with Submodular Costs

We consider the problem of partitioning a graph into cliques of bounded cardinality. The goal is to find a partition that minimizes the sum of clique costs where the cost of a clique is given by a set function on the nodes. We present a general algorithmic solution based on solving the problem variant without the cardinality constraint. We yield constant factor approximations depending on the s...

Cooperative Cuts: Graph Cuts with Submodular Edge Weights

We introduce a problem we call Cooperative cut, where the goal is to find a minimum-cost graph cut but where a submodular function is used to define the cost of a subsets of edges. That means, the cost of an edge that is added to the current cut set C depends on the edges in C. This generalization of the cost in the standard min-cut problem to a submodular cost function immediately makes the pr...

Constrained Non-monotone Submodular Maximization: Offline and Secretary Algorithms

Constrained submodular maximization problems have long been studied, most recently in the context of auctions and computational advertising, with near-optimal results known under a variety of constraints when the submodular function is monotone. The case of non-monotone submodular maximization is less well understood: the first approximation algorithms even for the unconstrained setting were gi...

Cooperative Set Function Optimization Without Communication or Coordination

We introduce a new model for cooperative agents that seek to optimize a common goal without communication or coordination. Given a universe of elements V, a set of agents, and a set function f , we ask each agent i to select a subset Si ⊂ V such that the size of Si is constrained (i.e., |Si| < k). The goal is for the agents to cooperatively choose the sets Si to maximize the function evaluated ...
